The Wendigo originated from the Algonquin Native tribe. It is said to be a demonic spirit that possesses humans and turns them into cannibals. The term Wendigo describes both the evil spirit as well as the humans in which the spirit possesses.

The legend of the Wendigo first originated when lost hunters or people stuck in a time with little food, usually during a the winter seasons, turned to cannibalism for food. They are said to have been infected by the demonic spirit, which leads them to cannibalism. When affected by the spirit, the victim is known have violent outbursts.

Legend also states that there are numerous different ways to be infected by the Windego. It can occur by  a curse from the medicine man, dreaming of the Windego, being bitten by the Windego, or having a encounter with one.

       Controversy on Killing a Wendigo!

Sam and Dean Winchester from the CW's Supernatural are, masters of fighting a variety of supernatural  creatures. They argue that while silver-tipped arrows can be used to weaken the Wendigo, but in order to kill a Wendigo, one must burn it with fire.

Dean Winchester's reaction when he remembered firearms are
next to useless at fighting Wendigos

-The best way to defend yourself from it is with silver bullets, and a silver blade like a knife or sword.
-To escape the windigo, you are suppose to throw feces this will distract the windigo and help you escape.
-The windigo can move so quickly that is not seen by humans.

    Good to know...

HOW DO YOU KILL A WINDIGO?

Wendigos are notoriously hard to kill. “This thing is a good hunter in the day, but an unbelievable hunter at night.” The Wendigo have few weakness, as far as weapons are concerned it can only be killed by iron, steel and silver. The most gruesome method of disposal is by shattering the creature’s ice heart with a silver stake and then dismembering the body with a silver axe.
